After opening an office in Coppell in 2021, Alphabet subsidiary Verily Life Sciences is relocating its headquarters from San Francisco to the city's Cypress Waters development later this quarter.

Founded as health care software company Google Life Sciences, Verily spun out as its own entity under the Google parent company in 2015. Focused on tech solutions to health issues ranging from smart watches that analyze health data to prevent and manage disease to other precision instruments, Verily officials said they chose to relocate their headquarters to North Texas due to its growing talent pool in health and technology.

“Since opening our Dallas office three years ago, Verily has become an active leader in the growing [Dallas-Fort Worth] health care and tech ecosystem,” a spokesperson said via email, adding that the move “provides a central U.S. office location for Verily to bridge our East and West Coast locations.”

The details

The company opened the Coppell office to focus on scaling its IT infrastructure and commercial organization, according to a 2021 press release.

The Coppell office will house Verily's principal operations with over 60 employees. The company is actively hiring for the relocation, according to a post on LinkedIn. Verily currently has 14 local open positions listed on its website.

Other U.S. offices will remain operational, and their employees will not be impacted by the decision, the company said.

Since its founding in 2015, Verily has raised around $3.5 billion through various investors, according to company documents. It most recently raised a $1 billion funding round led by Alphabet in 2022. The company also eliminated "approximately 15% of roles due to discontinued programs" in 2023, according to a memo to Verily employees.

“As the industry and regional population grow in Dallas, we look forward to our continued contributions as an economic player and community leader in the years ahead,” the spokesperson said.

The context

Verily joins a fleet of large companies relocating to the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

Dallas alone is home to more than 24 Fortune 500 companies, according to Dallas Economic Development documents.

“Dallas has a long legacy of fostering a vibrant business community and represents a growing center for technology and health innovation,” said Stephen Gillett, then Verily chief operating officer, in the 2021 release.

Gillett was promoted to chief executive officer effective in 2023.
