Dallas Area Rapid Transit is making preparations to make sure passengers and employees stay safe as cold weather is expected to arrive Dec. 22, according to a press release.

According to the press release, DART Operations teams are in place across the region to help continue regular service during the expected weather. In preparation for possible ice accumulation, bus and train station parking lots and walkways will be treated, and DART vehicles are being weatherized, according to the press release.

DART will open 11 transit centers and stations from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Dec. 23 and 24 to provide travel assistance and help riders stay warm. These stations include the Addison Transit Center, the CBD East Transfer Center, the CBD West Transfer Center, the Cockrell Hill Transfer Location, the Downtown Garland Station, the Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station, the Illinois Station, the J.B. Jackson Jr. Transit Center/MLK Jr. Station, the Ledbetter Station, the Parker Road Station and the South Garland Transit Center.

According to DART officials, residents are advised to dress in layers, wear a hat and cover exposed skin to stay warm. Officials also advise travelers to watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

Signs of hypothermia include confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking and sleepiness. Residents who experience any of these symptoms are advised to contact 911 immediately.
