1. High-speed rail connecting Dallas, Fort Worth to take next steps

A series of open houses is scheduled starting Aug. 29 that will offer more information about a proposed high-speed rail linking Arlington, Dallas and Fort Worth.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments is hosting four open house events across Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth and Grand Prairie, according to a news release. Each open house will feature a short video discussing the project as well as information boards explaining different high-speed technologies and the recommended route.

2. Former tennis pros coach the next generation at The Birch Racquet & Lawn Club in Keller

Husband-and-wife duo of Taylor and Jenny Dent as well as Taylor’s father, Phil Dent, were among the best in the world, and now they are teaching the next generation of tennis players.

The family moved from California to Texas in October 2020 to open The Birch, which features 15 total courts—and room to grow.

3. Grapevine-Colleyville ISD chief technology officer participates in White House cybersecurity summit

Kyle Berger, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD's chief technology officer—along with 15 other school administrators, educators and education technology providers from across the United States—convened at the White House on Aug. 7 in Washington, D.C.

According to a Grapevine-Colleyville ISD news release, the nation's secretaries of education and homeland security collaborated with the attendees, focusing on collaborative strategies to enhance cybersecurity measures across educational institutions nationwide.

4.Plano wine shop expansion to allow guests more room to relax, savor

Corner Wines & Wine Bar is scheduled to unveil its wine bar expansion Sept. 1 in Plano, owner Michael Martin said. The location at 4017 Preston Road, Ste. 535, has been in business since 2006, but Martin took over the operation in 2020 and began the expansion in 2022, which will add a full bar and additional seating for about 50 guests.

The store boasts over 400 different wines, including offerings from renowned Tuscan wine producer Tenuta San Guido, including the 2019 Sassicaia, a Bordeaux-style wine with notes of raisin and plum.

5. $288M allocated to transportation projects along US 380 in Collin County

The Texas Transportation Commission earmarked $288 million for projects along US 380 in Collin County as part of its 2024 Unified Transportation Program.

The funds are part of more than $11 billion slotted for road projects in the Dallas area over the next 10 years, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Texas Transportation Commission approved the 2024 Unified Transportation Program on Aug. 16, authorizing about $100 billion in spending on roads across the state.
