The city of Dallas’ charter, which outlines rules for how the city operates, is under review, a process that takes place every 10 years.

What’s happening?

A 15-member commission, appointed by City Council, is reviewing the document with plans to submit recommended changes to council.

Over the next seven months, the charter review commission will review the charter’s policy, and operational and technical provisions, according to a city news release. A schedule of the commission’s meetings, which are open to the public, is available on the city’s website.

Get involved

Residents can suggest amendments to the commission by:The deadline for residents to suggest amendments is Dec. 15. City staff will review the suggestions and add them to a running list for the charter review commission to consider.

What happens next?

The commission must finish reviewing the charter and submit a report of recommendations to City Council no later than May 21, 2024. City Council may approve, change or disregard the commission’s recommendations.


Any amendments approved by City Council must be listed as propositions on the Nov. 5, 2024 ballot for Dallas voters.
