Highlander School is closing after nearly six decades of pre-K through sixth grade education. After opening its doors in 1966 at 9120 Plano Road, officials with the private school announced it will officially close after the 2022-23 school year ends on May 25. The school was founded by Betty Woodring after she was unable to find any schools using the Carden teaching method nearby, according to the school’s history webpage. The Carden Method emphasizes a holistic approach to inductive learning.
“We have devoted our lives to the Highlander School family and believe it is now time to focus on our own family,” Principal Jill Reed wrote in a post on the school’s website. “While the doors will close at the end of this school year, Highlander’s legacy will live on through every person who walked these halls over the last 56 years.”
