The filing process for the upcoming Richardson ISD board of trustees May election begins Jan. 18.

According to RISD officials, RISD residents can fill out an online form to obtain an emailed application packet. An election packet can also be picked up at the RISD Administration Building at 400 S. Greenville Ave.

The election, which will feature two board seats on the ballot, will be held May 6. The two seats up for election are At-Large Place Seat 6 and Single Member District 3, which are served by Eric Eager and Debbie Renteria, respectively. Both candidates were initially elected during the 2020 election.

Board members in the school district serve three-year staggered terms and are not subject to term limits. Five of the seven seats on the board are chosen by registered voters of specific districts, while the remaining two seats are elected at large by all voters. This voting system is the result of a lawsuit settled in early 2019 that accused the board of Voting Rights Act violations.

District 3 has been designated by RISD as an “opportunity district," or an area where a majority of eligible voters are of a minority race, according to RISD officials.

No word has been made on whether Eager or Renteria will file for reelection at this time.

The deadline to file for the election is Feb. 17. Early voting begins on April 24 and continues through May 2 ahead of the May 6 general election.
