The Dallas Police Department is changing the way it has residents report certain crimes.

Starting July 3, reports of nonemergency offenses are required to be made online.

“The Dallas Police Department has implemented the online reporting system to better serve our citizens,” Deputy Chief Israel Herrera said in a video explaining the change.

While online reporting of nonemergency offenses has been available since 2020, it was previously voluntary. According to DPD, the change is meant to save time for those reporting offenses and to free officers up to focus on higher emergency calls.

Examples of nonemergency offenses that will soon require online reporting include harassing phone calls, burglary of a motor vehicle, graffiti, shoplifting, identity theft, criminal mischief and interference with child custody.

To make a report for a nonemergency offense, residents will need to visit the DPD website, select the offense they are reporting and complete an online form.

Once the report has been made, the person reporting the offense will receive a follow-up email confirming the report has been received along with a tracking number. Following a review of the report, residents will either receive an approval email with an official report and case number, a follow-up email requesting changes be made to the report, or a rejection if the report is a duplicate or doesn’t meet the state statute.
