“We could not find anything fashionable for him here. Everything is very Southern traditional [with] smocking,” she said. “We wanted high-fashion, modern kids’ clothes.”
To fill what they saw as a fashion void, Fink and her mother, Cindy Weed, opened The Little Things clothing store on Henderson Avenue in 2015. When they learned Hillside Village Shopping Center was being renovated, they moved the business there in 2018, as Lakewood had always been their desired location.
Weed said most of their customers are local, but their social media posts have drawn in people from all over.
“It’s all the California families moving in,” Weed said. “[They] have found we’re the ones who carry the lines they’re used to.” The mother-daughter team share the responsibility of choosing merchandise by going to market in New York and Dallas, and shopping online. They said they also give high priority to their customers’ requests. Fink said she spends time looking at what influencers’ children are wearing. After researching the products, they determine whether they will be added to the store’s inventory. The business owners said their favorite thing about the shop is meeting first-time moms who become regular customers. Weed and Fink said most of their customers are women, but on occasion they have fathers come in with special requests.“A dad came in with the gender reveal envelope from the doctor. He had not looked at it, [and] he gave it to me,” Weed said. “He picked out a boy and girl item and said, ‘I want you to look [in the envelope] and wrap up the right one as a gift with gender-neutral ribbon.’”Weed said she was particularly thrilled as she wrapped the gift for the man’s little girl, as he had told her this was their third child, and they already had two boys at home.
