What you need to know
Their latest announcement informs residents on what to do to prepare for the cold temperatures:
- Check on any elderly or otherwise vulnerable family, friends and neighbors before conditions worsen to ensure they and their homes are appropriately prepped.
- Bring pets inside for the week.
- Cover outdoor plants with blankets or sheets to keep them protected or bring them inside.
- Turn off irrigation systems like sprinklers to avoid dangerous icy conditions for sidewalks and roadways.
- Double-check outdoor pipes and spigots to ensure they're covered.
- Keep faucets dripping and open the doors of your under-sink cabinets any time temperatures are below freezing to avoid line breaks.
- Though the Electric Reliability Council of Texas does not anticipate issues like rolling blackouts, ice on power lines may still impact the community. Check Oncor and Tri-County Electric to report or track power outages.
- When heating homes, do not use an oven or a gas stovetop. Atmos Energy recommends ensuring external vents for dryers and other natural gas appliances are clear and removing snow or ice from gas meters only with a broom or brush. Space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, have plenty of space and be turned off before leaving the room or heading to bed.
