Keller officials approved a design service and construction contract for the first phase of the US 377 Median Landscape Improvement Project during their regular City Council meeting Sept. 2.

The details

The first phase of the improvement project will provide landscaping for the median at US 377 and Johnson Road. At the Sept. 2 meeting, council members approved a $239,000 contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc. to provide design services, construction and contract administration relating to this phase.

The contract will be funded from the Street Capital Improvement fund, which is provided by the general fund for the 2025-26 fiscal year, according to city documents.

The city will be reimbursed for a portion of construction costs with a $400,000 grant from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Green Ribbon Project for 2026 once the project is completed, Communication and Public Engagement Manager Rachel Reynolds said. The program provides funds to projects with the goal of beautifying the state’s highway system, according to TxDOT.

The median will have native and adaptive Texas shrubs, ornamental grasses, groundcover and ornamental trees. A construction timeline is not available yet because designs are just starting, Reynolds said.

The background

The median improvement project is part of a larger reconstruction effort in Old Town Keller. The city partnered with Tarrant County for a $21.9 million reconstruction project that includes roadway improvements on South Elm Street on June 4, 2024, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

The South Elm reconstruction project started earlier this year and is expected to be completed in 2028 in the summer, according to the city.
