The city made the announcement in a news release June 26.
Reedy joined the Roanoke Fire Department in 2007 as a volunteer firefighter and became a full-time firefighter in 2008. He also served as the commander of the department’s Fire Honor Guard and as the leader of the Roanoke Klownz on Fire. The group teaches children life and fire safety education by dressing up as clowns and using puppets, though the group also educates adults and senior citizens, according to its Facebook page.
“We are devastated by the loss of one of our own,” Roanoke Fire Chief Chris Addington said in the release. “Captain Reedy embodied the highest ideals of our profession—honor, service, and brotherhood. Our department is mourning together as a family, and we extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Mayor Scooter Gierisch ordered that the flags will be lowered at half staff throughout the city in remembrance of Reedy, according to a Facebook post made by the fire department.
A memorial has been set up at Fire Station 1, where Reedy was assigned, for the community to come and offer condolences to the department and the family, city officials said.
