The Keller City Council approved plans for a new sports facility, 6-1, on the south side of Golden Triangle Boulevard at its meeting Feb. 18.

Council member Tag Green was the only dissenting vote.

The details

The facility, called City Sports, will be about 83,620 square feet and include several courts for teams to play on.

It is part of a public-private partnership between the city and the developers of the project. It is meant to complement programs offered at the city’s sports park.

The developers, ME Development LLC, got a recommendation of approval for their plans by the city’s planning and zoning commission Jan. 28. Their plans include several variances, such as exceptions to minimum parking requirements.

City Sports won’t have all of the parking generally required by local regulations. Instead, parking will be shared with the nearby Keller Sports Park.

What they’re saying

Green said at the Feb. 18 meeting that he had concerns about there not being enough parking at the facility.

“It's very short-sighted for a facility that is now adding six basketball courts and 12 volleyball courts to what is already going to be there, competing with the same parking that we're trying to provide for a sports park that we're investing a great deal of money in,” Green said at the meeting.

However, ME Development Principal Esteban Mariel told the council that he and his staff will work with area sports teams and the city on scheduling to mitigate any parking concerns. In a near unanimous vote, the Keller City Council approved the plans for City Sports.

What’s next?

Mariel said his team hopes to break ground in June and the facility could open by fall 2026.
