In an effort to help keep Fort Worth clean, City Council approved the purchase of 12 street sweepers.

The new sweepers were put into service in September and the city decided to hold a contest to name each of them.

The details

The city of Fort Worth website released the winning names on Dec. 3.

More than 1,300 names were submitted by community members and that was narrowed down to 50. A vote was taken to select the 12 names and the resident who nominated a winning name received a prize pack of environmentally themed goodies, according to the city website.

The 12 winning names:
  • Sweep in the Heart of Texas
  • Lightning McClean
  • Obi-Wan Cleanobi
  • Sir Sweeps-A-Lot
  • Cowtown Clean Machine
  • Lone Star Sweeper
  • Sweepasaurus Rex
  • Baby Got Vac
  • Funkytown Fresh
  • Big Molly
  • Sweep Caroline
  • Bob
The gist

The 12 sweepers will replace the two sweepers previously used by city staff, cleaning up debris and litter, according to previous reporting.

City documents says the new sweepers are expected to cover 4,800 miles per month.

In 2023, 19.9 million pounds of trash and debris were collected from around the city, according to city data.

City officials have a goal of removing 20 million pounds of litter in 2024, Community Impact previously reported.

The backstory

The city has partnered with TxDOT to pilot a program that will increase the frequency of litter pickup along Fort Worth’s highways as part of its Keep Fort Worth Beautiful initiative—the city’s beautification, waste reduction and sustainability program.

The Solid Waste and Environmental Protection Funds portion of the budget implemented a raise in its monthly environmental fee—from 50 cents to $1.50—to help with the efforts.
