Tarrant County commissioners voted unanimously to rename the county’s Northeast courthouse in honor of outgoing Commissioner Gary Fickes during their regular meeting Oct. 1.

The details

According to county documents, the building will be renamed from Tarrant County Northeast Courthouse to Gary Fickes Northeast Courthouse. Work related to the name change will be performed by Brown Graphics.

The backstory

Fickes is retiring Dec. 31 after 18 years of service as the Tarrant County Precinct 3 Commissioner, according to court documents.

Fickes said his biggest accomplishment during his tenure was the DFW Connector project, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

“When I became a commissioner, we started working on the money part of it with [the Texas Department of Transportation] and the federal government,” Fickes said. “Putting this in a time perspective, when President Obama established what they called stimulus money, we were able to secure about a half a billion dollars of stimulus money. As a matter of fact, I was told our project, the DFW Connector, was the largest project funded in the United States.”

What else?

Before serving as county commissioner, Fickes was mayor of Southlake from 1989-96. While he will no longer be a commissioner, Fickes does have plans to stay involved with the community after Dec. 31.

“When you totally retire, you fade away, and I’m not sure I’m ready to fade away,” Fickes said. “I've got a lot of organizations to keep me busy.”
