Starting in May, Fort Worth families who sign up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program can visit their local library location to pick up a tote bag and booklet to aid their reading journey.

What you need to know

According to a city news release, the program encourages parents to read a book a day with their child to get them better prepared to start school. Reading one book a day equals 365 books in a year and will allow families to reach the 1,000-book goal in three years. Each book a child either reads or listens to as someone reads to them counts toward the goal of 1,000 books before they enter kindergarten.

The news release states three ways to help families reach their goal:
  • Attend regular story times at your local library branch
  • Registering online using the Beanstack app to track the number of books read
  • Visit your local library branch as your child reaches reading milestones for prizes
