Keller ISD’s board of trustees approved Dr. Cory Wilson as the district’s new superintendent during their regular board meeting July 24.

The gist

Wilson has been the interim superintendent for the district since February after former superintendent Tracy Johnson resigned in January.

He was named the only finalist in the district’s superintendent search in June during a special meeting, according to previous Community Impact reporting. The district was required by the state to have a 21-day waiting period before it could officially hire him.

“Since his appointment as interim superintendent in February, the board has been pleased with Dr. Wilson’s leadership and performance,” KISD board President John Birt said.

Birt said Wilson will focus on operational efficiencies, academic performance and developing students through athletics and fine arts.

Johnson’s resignation was accepted by the board Feb. 20, according to previous reporting. She submitted her resignation after speaking out against a possible plan to split the district during a KISD special meeting held Jan. 16.

The split was ultimately called off in March, and the board unanimously voted in May that it would not pursue the split further.

The backstory

Wilson has been part of the district for 23 years, according to the district. He taught 5th grade math and science at Parkwood Hill Intermediate School in 2002 and moved into administration in 2004 as the first assistant principal at Bette Perot Elementary School.

He has since held various leadership roles at KISD schools, such as the principal of BPES and Ridgeview Elementary School before joining the district’s administration in 2013 in supervisory roles.

“We have a bright future ahead of us, we have a great team, and we’re going to do great things,” Wilson said.
