Northwest ISD officials put out the call May 5 for members of the NISD community to send in their name recommendations for the district’s first early childhood center. Nominations will be accepted through May 19.

The details

According to a district news release, the center, which is slated to open August 2026, will be located off FM 156, south of Hillshire Drive and north of East Bonds Ranch Road.

The center is designed to supplement existing pre-kindergarten classes by:
  • Having a focus on experiential and play-based learning to cater to a young child’s developmental process
  • Offering staff daycare to continue to retain and recruit high-quality teachers and staff
The news release states families throughout the district can apply for enrollment at the center, but a lottery system will determine placement. Students not selected will attend pre-K at their home campus or the nearest school with available space.

Enrollment numbers for the district’s pre-K program have surpassed 1,000 students for the 2024-25 school year following an enrollment of 565 students during the 2022-23 school year, according to the news release. Additional details regarding Northwest ISD’s pre-K programs can be found here.

What you need to know

The news release states an electronic nomination form is available on the district’s website at www.nisdtx.org/nameschools.

Name recommendations of school buildings must fall into one of the following categories:
  • In memory of a person who has served the district or community, especially in service to children
  • In memory of any person who has made a significant contribution to society and/or education and his or her name shall lend prestige and status to an institution of learning
  • A local residential or geographic area
  • A district property donor or his or her family members
After the nomination period closes, NISD’s Facility Naming Committee will review submissions and provide a recommendation to the school board in June.
