Volunteers have been asked to read at Northwest ISD elementary schools as part of the Northwest Reads program.

The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 5, according to a district news release. Two new items this year include:

• An updated theme, which is "choose your own adventure"
• The introduction of Northie, the program's new mascot

Volunteers will choose from a variety of books to read to pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students at one of the district's 23 elementary schools.

According to the news release, participants will be able to:

• Read to students either in person or virtually
• Engage with the class and share why reading is important to them
• Inspire students to become lifelong readers

What you need to know

The news release states three steps must be completed in order to become a guest reader:

• Fill out a volunteer application
• Complete the Volunteer 101 Orientation
• Sign up for a campus and choose a time slot

For community members interested in getting involved in the district’s reading initiative but can’t participate in the Feb. 5 event, the news release states volunteers can donate a book to a library or classroom.

According to the news release, Northwest ISD librarians have composed a list of district-approved books that can be donated. Lists are available through each campus librarian.
