Student representatives of the district’s Wellness Ambassador program shared an overview of the work they’ve accomplished at the Dec. 9 Northwest ISD school board meeting.

The details

According to district documents, NISD established the Wellness Ambassador program during the 2023-24 school year with student representatives at each of the district’s four high schools. Approximately 60 students have participated in the program, where the mission includes:
  • Encouraging a positive school climate
  • Focusing on substance use prevention and teen mental health
  • Supporting their communities through service projects
According to district documents, Wellness Ambassadors received training on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of a mental health or substance use challenge. They also have the opportunity to get certified in teen mental health first aid. They used their training to design and then implement activities at district middle schools to teach students about the potential dangers of substance abuse.

Activities included:
  • Coping skills scramble
  • Substance abuse trivia
  • Substance abuse-20 questions
  • Bean boozled
  • Candy-grams
What they’re saying

Place 3 trustee Anne Simpson complimented the students on the amount of positivity they are bringing to the district.

“The real focus on wellness is so uplifting and helps all of us grow,” Simpson said.

In thanking the students for their hard work, Superintendent Mark Foust also took a moment to recognize the efforts of their sponsors.

“You guys are training up our kiddos and empowering them to go out and affect their peers in our middle schools,” Foust said. “You’re investing in those kids and it’s making a difference in our school communities.”
