In an update to the Keller ISD community, Superintendent Tracy Johnson spoke about the frustrations that teachers and administrators have had trying to address challenges with students that are on their phones rather than learning.
The details
Johnson said the policy allows for students to have devices but they must be powered off and in a bag, purse or backpack during the school day.
“They cannot be on the body of a student,” Johnson said.
Johnson added that the ban includes any Bluetooth devices, such as headphones and earbuds, except for teacher-approved purposes.
Quote of note
“It’s hard for a teacher to compete with YouTube or TikTok videos," Johnson said. “The majority of the disciplinary incidents are related to cell phones. This is us reclaiming our student learning environment.”
A closer look
Should a student violate the policy, Johnson outlined consequences for the first offense which include:
- Confiscation of phone
- Parent contact
- Detention
Johnson said that staff members can confiscate any devices that are used without permission.
"I will stand shoulder to shoulder with every staff member in this district and we will uphold these consequences," Johnson said.
Board members supported the policy and reiterated the fact that the board will support staff as they uphold the policy during the school year.
“The board has your back,” board President Charles Randklev said.
