Christmas gifts came a few days early for several Northwest ISD teachers in the form of teaching grants awarded by the district’s education foundation.

The details

According to a district news release, the Northwest ISD Education Foundation awarded 30 innovative teaching grants totaling $68,893 at 21 different schools across the district on Dec. 20. Teachers who received awards were surprised with oversized checks celebrating the award in their classrooms and during school-wide assemblies.

Diving in deeper

The news release stated the NISD Education Foundation has awarded more than $1.8 million to teachers in the district to date. The NISD Education Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to help empower educators and encourage students to prepare for their futures through the following initiatives:
  • Teaching grants
  • Scholarships for graduating seniors
  • District initiatives such as the free resource store and library
According to the news release, the following projects are a few examples of what the grant funds will be used for:
  • Solar Eclipse Party 2024 ($1,210, Prairie View Elementary): The 2024 eclipse will be the last solar eclipse in totality over North Texas until 2077. This grant purchases two solar eclipse celestial model bundles for each grade to learn and observe the process of the solar eclipses.
  • Exploring the Hidden Depths of Sharks ($2,619, Byron Nelson High School): This grant provides funding to purchase 210 preserved dogfish shark specimens and dissection kits so students can complete a hands-on dissection.
  • Super Siblings to Book Buddies ($1,989, J.C. Thompson Elementary): With this grant, older students, or “Super Siblings,” will check out bags of early literacy books and interactive activities to take home for shared reading experiences with their younger siblings.
