A closer look

The news release stated, to monitor road conditions, NISD transportation and maintenance staff drive roads throughout the district during periods of inclement weather. In addition, district officials communicate with the regional weather-response services for their guidance.

Diving in deeper

The district website stated several other measures district officials take to ensure student safety and maintain facilities during periods of inclement weather. They include:
  • Facilities: Staff maintains a normal operating temperature in all facilities for several reasons, including to prevent a drastic fall in temperature, to protect plumbing and fire systems within the buildings, and for energy savings.
  • Buses: Mechanics and drivers arrive early to ensure buses start properly and are warmed up before picking up students. Drivers will wait longer at bus stops for students who may remain in their home to wait for the bus in lieu of waiting outside for their bus. Drivers can also return to bus stops to pick up any students who have missed the bus during inclement weather conditions.
  • Continued monitoring: To ensure buildings do not have damage after the period of inclement weather has passed, the maintenance staff will perform a walk-through in the building the following weekend.
