Hurst said that the school, which opened in 2000, continued its tradition this school year by being the only unified champion elementary school in the state of Texas. Unified champion is a designation from the Special Olympics organization and is aimed at promoting social inclusion by creating sports, classroom and school climates of acceptance, according to the Special Olympics website.
