After being plagued by delays that postponed construction, Outpost 36 Texas Barbeque opened for business July 12. The restaurant is located at 1801 S. Main St. in Keller.

According to the city’s Facebook post, Outpost 36 serves up a menu that includes brisket, sausage, ribs, pulled pork, turkey and chicken to less-common options like smoked bologna, Texas brisket chili and “armadillo eggs”—cheese-filled jalapenos wrapped with sausage and bacon.

The backstory

The post went on to state that the Texas barbecue spot is the second venture for partners Jeff Lowery, Dwight Dowell and Chris Polk, whose Horizon 76 just next door has been serving diners since the summer of 2020. Like Horizon 76, this project called for a significant renovation—area residents may recognize this building as the old Golden Corral—and a history-focused theme; Horizon is a nod to American independence in 1776, while Outpost honors Texas independence secured from Mexico in 1836.

The details

According to the city’s post, the space features the following:
  • Indoor and outdoor seating areas
  • A private dining room and custom-made smokers named in honor of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings
  • A live feed of the smokers to watch from the dining room
The menu offers everything from the meat—which is from the restaurant's own cattle ranch, Outpost 76—to classic sides like potato salad, green beans, macaroni and cheese, cracklins and pinto beans. Desserts include banana pudding, fried pies and ice cream. Alcohol will also soon be available, including draft beer, Two Brothers wine, and cocktails that include frozen margaritas and a peach tea-inspired bourbon sipper, according to the Facebook post.
