Carlos Benitez said he moved to America from El Salvador in the early 1980s. He started working in the restaurant industry in 1987 as a busboy. In 2002 he said he opened Tio Carlos in Irving. Then in 2019 he opened another location on Main Street in Keller.

Byron Nelson High School students run chef-guided Byron Bistro

A program at Byron Nelson High School allows students to get experience running a restaurant, from hosting, cooking and cleaning. The four-year program is guided by two chefs.

Family serves award-winning tamales six days a week at Tommy Tamale in Keller

In 2010, Steve Barker needed a job, so he started selling tamales out of his truck in Decatur. He said he went from business to business asking people to buy his tamales. They were selling. He said he soon realized he needed a business name. There are now Tommy Tamale locations in Grapevine, Coppell and Keller. Barker said his wife, two granddaughters, two grandsons and a son-in-law all work at Tommy Tamale.


Horizon 76 American Grill House provides patriotic ambiance in Keller

Fueled by decades of friendship and restaurant industry experience, Jeff Lowery, Dwight Dowell and Chris Polk launched Horizon 76 American Grill House in Keller on June 18, 2020. In addition to being co-owner of the business, Dowell is the executive chef and a Keller resident. He said he is excited about the menu and pointed out the uniqueness of many items, including the burgers that are made with an equal blend of filet mignon, prime chuck and brisket.

Jonny’s Pizza serves New York-style pizza in northeast Fort Worth

The first Jonny’s Pizza opened in Aubrey in 2019 followed by the Fort Worth location in 2021. In May 2022, the owners launched another pizzeria in Frisco.


Dana Maracine is the general manager of the Fort Worth restaurant. She said many customers tell her Jonny’s Pizza is the closest to New York-style pizza they can find here.

Dan’s Bagels in Trophy Club serves New York-style bagels and more

In March 2020, Trophy Club resident Dan Hilbert found himself with a lot of free time.

Before moving to Trophy Club six years ago, Hilbert and his family lived in Connecticut, and he worked in New York City for almost 20 years. Since moving to Texas, the Hilbert family could not find good New York-style bagels. With his newly found leisure time, Hilbert filled the void by making bagels.


Baja Cantina boasts margaritas, scratch kitchens in Keller, Roanoke

When Tony Segovia opened Baja Cantina 16 years ago in Watauga, he did so armed with decades of restaurant industry experience, including owning a restaurant in Mexico before moving to America. His daughter, Gloria Segovia has been working at her father’s restaurant since she was 15 years old. Today, she is the general manager of Baja Cantina’s four locations, which include restaurants in Keller and Roanoke.

Trophy Club eatery Blue 22 Sports Grill focuses on food, family-friendly environment

When Trophy Club residents Mack and Veronique Graham launched Blue 22 Sports Grill in November, they brought with them years of industry experience. Veronique has a background in catering, sales and marketing. Mack has owned and operated restaurants since he was 22 years old and bought his first restaurant in 2001.


Fort Worth's Coco Shrimp aims to 'spread the aloha'

When Coco Shrimp founders Isaac Hadley and Jordan Barrus were attending college in Hawaii, they worked in a food truck that served shrimp, according to Ariana Escobar, a manager of the Coco Shrimp restaurant on Heritage Trace Parkway in Fort Worth.
