The rehabilitation of Runway 17R/35L, one of the largest of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport’s seven runways, was completed ahead of schedule on Oct. 11, according to a DFW Airport news release.

The gist

The improvements included a complete reconstruction of the runway with high-density asphalt overlay, new drainage, lighting, and signing and deicing infrastructure, the release said.

Sustainable initiatives were also added, including replacing 2,700 runway lights to energy-efficient LED fixtures, and recycling 30,000 cubic yards of reclaimed concrete that was reused in the runway project and other construction projects at the airport. The runway is now 13,400 feet long and 200 feet wide, according to the release.

"Today marks the successful completion of the largest runway rehabilitation in our airport's history, which was achieved ahead of schedule and with no recordable safety accidents thanks to our focus on delivering a safe and efficient project," said Mohamed Charkas, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure and Development at DFW.

The backstory

The runway opened partially in May after a nine-month closure for the rehabilitation project, according to a DFW Airport news release.

The project was funded through the $45 million Airport Infrastructure Grant awarded to DFW airport by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration.
