With construction underway at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Terminal C gates and parking garages have closed.

The C28 to C33 section of the terminal currently is under construction. The C30 security checkpoint and adjacent American Airlines check-in counters are closed, as well.

The Express South parking lot has closed but the Remote North parking lot reopened earlier this year to provide additional capacity, according to a press release from DFW Airport. Separately, the entrance to the Terminal C south parking garage, adjacent to Gates C26 to C39, closed Sept. 14, giving parked vehicles 30 days to exit the garage in preparation for demolition, the release said.

The overview

DFW Forward is a $9 billion project dedicated to transforming terminals, adding new facilities and amenities, growing the number of gates, improving roadways and connectivity and enhancing the airfield, according to a press release.

“After 50 years of growth, innovation and service to our community, a new era is now beginning at DFW,” said Sean Donohue, DFW Airport Chief Executive Officer. “The incredible upgrades and expansions we have planned across the airport are going to reimagine the customer experience in many ways and provide the needed framework to support more historic growth in air travel to and from North Texas.”

The project

Rebuilding Terminal C will be a $3 billion project, according to the press release, and includes new glass windows, removing over 400 view-blocking columns and raising the roof. New shops, restaurants, lounge spaces, check-in areas, check point areas and restrooms will also be added.

Additionally, double-loaded pier expansions will occur in Terminals A and C. Four gates and 15,000 square feet of space will be added to Terminal C and 140,000 square feet of space and five gates will be added to Terminal A. Travel amenities, including restaurants, shops, seating areas and restrooms, will also be included in the expansion.

The south parking adjacent to Terminal C will be rebuilt with more parking and modern parking management technology added, the release said.

The design-build team for Terminal C’s first phase is Austin Commercial, Azteca Enterprises and Alpha & Omega, with HOK and Muller & Muller, Ltd. as design team members, per the release.

What else?

Additional projects will commence in the upcoming months, such as:
  • Construction of Terminal F to include 15 gates, a Skylink station to connect terminals, modernized systems and expanded concessions
  • New facility to heat and cool DFW Airport using renewable energy
  • New east-west thoroughfare on the south side of the airport to connect Rental Car Drive to SH 360
  • A third end-around taxiway to enhance the safety and efficiency of aircraft movements
  • Two new fire stations on both sides of the airport
  • New facilities for cargo aircraft parking with seven new positions
The backstory

Officials with DFW Airport and American Airlines signed a 10-year use and lease agreement in May 2023, which included the construction of Terminal F and renovations for Terminal C, Community Impact previously reported.

In late August, DFW Airport leaders joined together for a ceremonial “wall breaking” to start the reconstruction of Terminal C, beginning the first phase of “DFW Forward," according to a release.

The overall project is estimated to be finished in 2030. View updates and closures here.
