As Summer Moon Coffee faces waves of uncertainty due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it has been the support of a loyal, local following and the creativity of staff that have kept the wood-fired coffee house afloat, owner Greg Richardson said.

“We are very hopeful that it does turn around,” he said. “In the meantime, as long as people still have a need for coffee, we are going to be here.”

At what was once a buzzing social-gathering-spot in the heart of Keller Town Center, with an average of 50-60 people occupying tables on a given day, Summer Moon has shifted strategies to to-go and online ordering, Richardson said.

Online orders now account for 70%-80% of the business, he said.

“We were fortunate to already have [online ordering] in place,” Richardson said. “It has just become a busier channel for us.”

The coffee house has also found success with new products, such as Moonmilk, gallon cold brew and coffee pods, which are compatible with popular brands of at-home brewing machines, he said.

As Summer Moon is an independent roaster, Richardson said, its beans are sourced from the Austin area and are in no short supply. The coffee house has 16 different varieties of beans, including the best-selling house blend, and sales have not wavered as more people are buying bags for at-home consumption, he said.

“We are one of the fortunate ones and are very blessed to have a very loyal following,” Richardson said. “Our sales are not as high as they would be otherwise. But we have really held up well, and that’s based on the generosity of our customers. We are very grateful for that.”
