After serving for 18 years as the commissioner of Precinct 3 in Tarrant County, Commissioner Gary Fickes will not seek re-election in 2024.

“As I’ve casually said over the past three years, I will not seek re-election in 2024,” Fickes said in a statement. “It’s now time to make that official.”

According to a news release, before serving as a Tarrant County commissioner, Fickes spent 10 years serving as the mayor of Southlake and the chair of the Southlake Planning and Zoning Committee.

“This has been the most incredible and rewarding job of my life,” Fickes said. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as your voice for our transportation needs, senior issues and other community-related initiatives, locally and in Austin.”

As commissioner, Fickes’s major initiatives that he spearheaded included the Empowering Seniors event and the Tarrant Transportation Summit.

“Most of all, I am grateful and privileged to have worked for you, and with your support, we made NE Tarrant County, Precinct 3, a better place to work, live and raise our families,” Fickes said in the statement.
