As much of the world took a step back during the pandemic, David and Ashley Knapp took steps forward to turn their dream of customizing classic cars into a reality.

Two years later, they are co-owners of what they call their second child, StreetMod Designs.•

The Fort Worth shop specializes in designing, repairing and customizing classic cars. The couple co-founded the company in August 2020.

David said the business was more successful than they had hoped. Ashley said that by the end of 2020, they were fully booked.

“Day one, we ran this place and didn’t have any customers, and we were like, ‘Oh my God, how are we gonna pay rent?’” David said. “And now we’re booked up for six months. People are still trying to get in, and we just don’t have room to do it.”

David, who has worked in the car industry for over 15 years, said this business had always been his dream. He said he takes care of the mechanics side of the business while Ashley manages the advertising and finances.

“I took business courses in college, and then having the public relations and advertising degree helped a whole bunch on the back ends,” Ashley said. “We’re kind of like the perfect husband-and-wife duo in a business.”

While the shop will work on any car, StreetMod is focused on classic vehicles. The couple said they love learning about the history of the vehicles.

David spent more than a year restoring a truck that a customer’s dad bought new in 1947.

“It’s been on their farm since 1947-48,” he said. “Her parents passed away during the pandemic, and she wants to get it back up and running again for the grandkids.”
