The details
The shade addition was approved at a regular city council meeting Dec. 2. It will cost $90,577 to purchase and install, according to city documents, and will come from the Parks Capital Improvement Project Fund.
Chase Oaks Activity Node was originally installed in 2024 with some shade structures, but the new addition will cover the entire playground. Installation is expected to take two or three months, communication and public engagement manager Rachel Reynolds said.
Also of note
The city is planning to provide Johnson Road Park’s playground with the next shade structure in 2027 with its playground replacement, Reynolds said.
The city has been working on a playground replacement program after an uptick from residents seeking more shade for Keller playgrounds.
“Those comments prompted us to ask specifically about support for playground shade structures in our 2024 Community Survey,” Reynolds said.
Playground shade structures were the fourth-most popular item among new investment priorities in the survey. Residents are encouraged to participate in a new survey for Johnson Road Park through Jan. 18 to share feedback about other park improvements.
