Council members approved the move during a meeting on Sept. 13.
The current contract was set to expire on Dec. 31 and the five-year extension saw a proposed annual rate increase from 3% to 4%.
Current residential customers pay $12.51 per month for trash and curbside recycling and that will go up to $14.65 starting Jan. 1.
The contractor will provide one container per residence, which will be part of a six month phase-in process in which Republic Services provided carts and recycling bins will be the only approved containers. If trash or recycling is not in the approved containers after six months, Republic Services will not pick up the items.
As part of the contract, pick-up service will be done at least one time per week and special pick-up of large or heavy items will be done the second and fourth weeks of each month—the same day as curbside pick-up—for residential customers. Recognized holiday pick-ups will be done on the following day.
Acceptable items for recycling includes aluminum cans, plastic bottles, steel cans, newspapers, including slick inserts, all colors glass, and corrugated cardboard and mixed-paper boxes. As part of the contract, Republic Services will donate $3,000 on an annual basis for the city to do recycling education.
Commercial pick-ups can happen up to six times per week. A two-time a week customer that used to pay $128.80 will now pay $150.77.
Part of the contract also includes a 30-yard roll off container for the city to use during Celebrate Roanoke and Fourth of July Celebration. Republic Services, based in Fort Worth, will also donate $3,500 to the city for the latter event.
