The city of Grapevine’s park system has expanded following a land acquisition.

During the Oct. 7 City Council meeting, Kathy Nelson, planning manager for Grapevine Parks & Recreation, announced the city has acquired 7.2 acres of land next to Settlers Park. The additional land brings the park to 24.28 acres, according to city documents.

She said the extra space will provide much-needed parking, including handicap-accessible spaces and an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant park entrance located at 2205 Bass Pro Court.

“This park has been a home run,” council member Chris Coy said. “I’m excited to move into the next phase next year and continue the project.”

Zooming in

Nelson spoke to council about the landscape architecture contract with La Terra Studios for the second phase of the project. She said the park was planned in phases during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Dallas-based company was awarded a $150,000 contract during the meeting. According to city documents, the work will include:
  • Evaluation of potential future amenities for newly acquired acreage
  • Design and preparation of construction documents for new improvements
  • Refinement of previously developed construction documents
  • Bidding and construction administration

Nelson said the city anticipates construction starting on the second phase in 2026. Two grants from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department will help cover costs, she said. According to a presentation, Phase 2 will include:

  • Multipurpose loop trail
  • Fishing pier completion
  • Programmed camping/education nodes
  • Group pavilion for picnic/instruction
  • Soft surface nature trail
  • Paved public parking
  • ADA-compliant park entrance
  • Connection to citywide trail system
The estimated construction budget is $4.5 million, and a contract will be awarded at a later date, Nelson said.
