Ronell Smith looked back on his tenure as the Place 4 council member in Southlake during the April 15 meeting.

Smith has termed out on his spot on council and will be replaced by Austin Reynolds, who is the lone candidate for the spot in the May 3 election. Reynolds will be sworn in during the May 6 meeting, according to a Facebook post by the city’s official page.

Smith talked about moving his family from Colleyville to Southlake years ago for the school system and along the way, he got involved in civic duties.

During the April 15 meeting, he said following the incident in Ferguson, Missouri, he wanted to get involved in the community and joined the Citizens on Patrol program in Southlake.

“I felt it was important for somebody like me to support the police and fire and that is something I still feel strong about,” he said.

The next year, he started 10 years of service to the city. He served on the zoning board of adjustment for four years. In 2019, he was elected to Place 4 and joined the tax increment reinvestment zone board.

He replaced current council member Randy Williamson in Place 4.

“One thing I admire about you is you’re a man of your convictions and you stay with your convictions,” Williamson said. “And that is so important when you sit up here on this dais is to remain founded in those convictions.”

What else?

Smith said he wanted to be an advocate for kids, families and businesses in Southlake and a conversation with former Mayor Laura Hill encouraged him to run for council.

“I remember this, a good friend of mine, Mary Alford, said we don’t need another politician; be a statesman,” Smith said. “I grew up a huge fan of [President Ronald] Reagan and he was my North Star for politics, but I never thought of myself as a politician.”

In 2020, he joined the Southlake Parks Development Corporation and Metroport Teen Court advisory board. Smith joined the Southlake Public Library task force in 2022.

In their own words

“I’ve never regretted it,” Smith said. “I’m going to miss this spot. You’re not going to lose a lot of leadership. This team will to continue to lead the ship the right way and for the right reasons. I feel great about it, you all are in great hands.”
