The gist
City Council approved a construction contract of up to $860,622 for the contractor’s services during a Dec. 3 meeting. Funds for the project are available from the city’s capital projects list, according to a staff memo.
Work will primarily occur around City Hall’s downstairs lobby in the utility billing, planning services, building services and engineering areas, according to the staff memo. The project scope includes:
- Installation of new counters
- Installation of new doors
- Installation of new receiving counters with glass partitions
- Installation of an entry vestibule along the Barton Street entrance
Public Works Director Bryan Beck said the project is expected to start construction in January and should finish in May. City staff has worked closely with the city’s facilities committee and architectural firm Architexas before the project was awarded to Fransen Pitman.
Architexas was hired by the city earlier this year to design the remodel.
Beck reviewed the project’s main components before council members voted on the item. Three new receiving counters will be installed at the Public Works, Utility Billing and Building Permits departments in the lobby, Beck said.
New counters will include glass partitions and new doors for improved security and managed access between the lobby and staff workspaces, he said. Temporary workspaces will be provided for customers to do business during construction.
“We also propose to install a vestibule at the rear doors,” Beck said. “This improvement will improve the climate control in the building especially in the winter.”
