The Grapevine Police Department will be adding a detective who will solely focus on crimes against women.

The framework

The Grapevine City Council approved the acceptance of funds from Gov. Greg Abbott and the Crimes Against Women Formula Grant program. The grant will be for three years, starting in the current 2024-25 fiscal year, and will be renewable Sept. 30 for the following two years.

Grapevine Police Chief Mike Hamlin said the grant funds 70% of the estimated cost of $136,603, with the city of Grapevine paying $40,981 for the remaining 30%.

He said his department applied for the grant in February and presented the resolution during the Oct. 15 council meeting.

Context

Hamlin said the duties for the Crimes Against Women detective will include the investigation of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and human trafficking cases. He added the detective will assist the victim and ensure collection and processing of evidence.

He said in reviewing crimes against women from Oct. 1, 2021, to Sept. 30, 2024, there have been more than 1,300 cases of domestic violence or felony assault where females were victims.
