The city of Colleyville will hold a grand opening for its recreation center Aug. 27.

The event will take place at 5008 Roberts Road from 6-8 p.m. to showcase the renovations the city has done to the former Colleyville Covenant Church, according to assistant city manager Mark Wood. He said the facility will be open the next day for residents.

Put in perspective

During a work session prior to the Aug. 20 Colleyville City Council meeting, Wood provided an update on the project that started with the purchase of the property in 2022.

The city set aside $1.5 million to renovate the church sanctuary into a gym and saved nearly $1 million on the project by doing the work in house, according to Wood.

The overall cost of the project with the addition of work on a small gymnasium, roof, general building improvements, air conditioning and security cameras is $3.4 million, according to Wood’s presentation. The city spent $2.3 million as of Aug. 20, he said.

“We are under budget on all of our items and ready to open the building up,” Wood said.

The details

Work on the small gymnasium hasn’t started because it is part of the fiscal year 2024-25 budget at $295,000.

Called the north gym, it is similar in size to a middle school gymnasium court, Wood said. The court will feature six basketball goals and will be striped for three sports: basketball, volleyball and pickleball.

What else?

Two contracts were awarded during the council meeting for the north gym.

Goat Athletix Inc., from Tomball, was awarded a contract for $63,595 for the six basketball goals and installation. City document says there is a 10-week wait for delivery.

The other contract was for floor leveling of the existing basketball court and the former student worship center. City documents show the worship room is 2.125 inches higher than the basketball court. Supercap Southwest from Austin was awarded the contract for $60,034.
