In June the town of Westlake installed nearly 30 license-plate reading cameras in city limits, according to a city official.

Town council previously approved the contract for $116,000 with Flock Group, Inc. during the Feb. 5 meeting to install 30 cameras at all entrances in the town and at Westlake Academy.

The details

The cameras register the make, model and color of the vehicle and the license plate number. This information is compared to secure federal and state data banks that hold information on stolen vehicles, active arrest warrants, as well as Amber and Silver Alerts, according to city documents.

If the information matches what is in the data, the Keller Police Department—which provides police coverage for the town—is alerted within 30 seconds of the vehicle passing by the camera, according to city documents. That information could help the Keller Police Department locate the vehicle.

The cameras will only capture video of vehicles entering the town limits, not leaving, according to city documents. The images are held for 30 days and then deleted, according to information provided by Flock Group.

What else?

The February presentation stated the camera reader will only be monitored for felonies and will not be used for traffic enforcement, such as speeding or an unregistered vehicle.

The Keller Police Department will provide town council with monthly reports showing how many vehicles were tied to felonies/outstanding warrants and how many arrests were made.
