Carroll ISD trustees will consider cutting low-enrollment courses, and adding five new career electives, as part of the 2026-27 Academic Planning Guide, following an Oct. 20 board meeting.

CISD will not need to hire any additional staff for the new classes, and the district already has funding available, CISD Executive Director for Curriculum Gina Peddy said.

Zooming in

The district plans to remove five courses from the school’s curriculum, as well as combine several others, Peddy said. The removed courses include:
  • Independent study for gifted and talented
  • Algebra 3
  • Advanced Precalculus
  • Animation 1 and 2
No students have enrolled in Advanced Precalculus since the College Board created an AP precalculus course that debuted in fall 2023, Peddy said.

“Ever since that course was created, it has been filled," Peddy said. "We no longer need the advanced precalculus class, we need more AP classes."

Peddy added that no students have enrolled in Animation 1 and 2 or Independent Study for multiple years.

What else?

CISD plans to add five career and technical education programs based on employment data from the Texas Workforce Commission and Comptroller’s Office, according to district documents. The new courses include:
  • Advanced Journalism 2 and 3
  • Aviation Ground School
  • AP Cybersecurity
  • AP Business and Personal Finance
District staff recommended AP Cybersecurity and AP Business and Personal Finance based on projected job growth in the technology and financial sectors in North Texas, CISD Career and Technical Education Coordinator Kim Goodman said.

The AP courses will enable students to earn credits for college and technical certifications, Goodman added.

“We want to make sure we’re looking at those industry certifications and that’s what AP can help us provide,” Goodman said. “Not only are you going to have the opportunity to get college credit with an AP course, but you’re going to get those industry certifications.”

Peddy recommended adding Advanced Journalism 2 and 3 due to the existing journalism program’s popularity, Peddy said.

The new courses will be available at Carroll High School and Carroll Senior High School, Peddy said.

Also of note

CISD also plans to implement an off-campus Aviation Ground School elective, where students can earn credit for taking classes at a nearby flight school. A 2023 Government Accountability Office report showed that roughly 27% of airline pilots were less than 10 years from the mandatory retirement age of 65.

“Because there is going to be an aviation shortage, we need to see if we can build a robust program for that as well,” Goodman said.

Students can take classes at any nearby flight school, and are responsible for any associated costs, Peddy said.

Looking ahead

Goodman added that CISD is developing an advanced networking course, and expects to implement it for the 2027-28 school year.

Peddy expects trustees to vote on the new courses and Academic Planning Guide at the November board meeting.
