Editor's note: This story has been updated to include the school district's Summer Food Service Program is federally funded and includes the number of years the school district has participated in the program. Grapevine-Colleyville ISD’s Summer Food Service Program will provide free breakfast and lunch to children age 18 and younger, according to a May 1 news release from the school district. The program will begin in June at Timberline Elementary School and Grapevine Middle School. The district's Summer Food Service Program is made possible by a federally funded, state-administered program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Program sponsors provide free meals to children at a central site and are reimbursed for the meals they serve through the USDA. This will be GCISD's 15th year to participate in the program. Children do not need to live or attend schools in GCISD in order to benefit from the program, GCISD Communications Director Addison Elliott said. They will receive meals regardless of economic status. "Campuses are open to [the] public during established serving times," Elliott said in an email. "We will feed all kids within those times from the first kid to the last kid." Food insecurity in Texas ranked above the national average in 2017, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture published in September 2018. To receive the free meals, families can take their children to either of the two schools during the designated serving times, according to the news release. Children will have some choices in food options. They will need to choose a minimum of three components for breakfast and lunch, according to the news release. For lunch, the meal must include a fruit or vegetable in order to be a complete meal. Children must eat at the school and cannot take meals to go. Parents can reach out to the GCISD Nutrition Services Department at 817-251-5618 for more information. The menu can be found here.
