Houston-based SafeWay Driving, a 42-year-old driving school, is looking to partner with community members in Colleyville who want to teach high school students at Colleyville Heritage High School safe driving techniques.
"With driving incidents already up by 9 percent in the first half of 2016, we believe our program could have a tremendous affect on Colleyville's high teen population," SafeWay Driving Vice President Ann Littmann said. "We are looking forward to partnering with the community."
Littmann said the company is looking for retired first-responders, coaches and school teachers to become trained instructors, with the hope that the company could launch in Colleyville in the beginning of 2017.
Although driving lessons are held in person, the company, which will have no physical location, will otherwise be online.
Littmann said SafeWay is unique in that it embraces technology and uses it to teach teenagers how to safely navigate the roads.
"We are taking driving lessons into the current century by embracing technology," she said. "Our courses are completely online compared to taking them in a classroom, and our instructors have iPads in the car that they use to help instruct."
Littmann said through technology the company is able to have more communication with parents.
"Each student has a driver dash board that allows parents to view their progress and see feedback from the instructor," she said. "Parents are much more involved."
Although SafeWay franchises partner with schools in the enrollment of students into their driver’s ed program, the program itself is not run through the school.
