She started out by renting a space at 405 S. Main St. in Grapevine where she sold Department 56 Christmas village collectibles and other seasonal items. She soon outgrew that space and expanded to the space next door.
Ten years later, she bought the building across the street and set up shop there.
Tracey Wendt, one of Bultmann’s three daughters, works at the store full time to help her mother.
"Now that I’m 80, ... I don’t think people would expect me to be here 10-12 hours a day,” Bultmann said.
Bultmann said she has many customers who have been coming to the store since it opened.
“I have kids who have graduated from college and were just little kids when they started coming in here picking out their ornaments,” she said.
She added that the Seasons 56 village items are also a draw for multigenerational repeat customers.
“We have one family whose tradition is to look at [Department] 56, then they go to brunch at Esparza’s then they come back after brunch and buy,” Bultmann said.
In addition to their local customers, they have many out-of-state tourists visiting Grapevine for conventions, weddings and other events.
With six family members working at the store, they divide some responsibilities while sharing others. Chuck Bultmann, Sally’s husband, helps wherever needed.
“This is a family business,” Wendt said. “We’re all here every day.”
Bultmann said first-time customers often remark on how beautiful the store is.
“I don’t know many stores like this,” she said. “I wanted to make it like I was going in market with beautiful displays and products. You want to be the best you can be.”
