Black Friday is known for drawing crowds of eager shoppers to big-box stores, but smaller shops have Small Business Saturday the following day to promote the idea of supporting local retailers and keeping holiday spending in the community.
Small Business Saturday takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and was started by American Express Co. in 2010 to draw attention to small and family-owned businesses on the busiest shopping weekend of the year, Small Business Saturday spokeswoman Nicole Reyhle said.
Last year the event generated $16.2 billion in retail sales nationwide, up from $14.3 billion in 2015, she said.
Many businesses in Grapevine, Colleyville and Southlake are participating this Saturday, including:
Apricot Lane Boutique
The boutique, which opened in September, is owned locally by Jan and David Morris. Located in Southlake Town Square at 218 State St., Southlake, the business will be celebrating Small Business Saturday with $20 off a purchase of $80 or more.
Blue Pomegranate Gallery
The gallery, located in Southlake Town Square at 1236 Prospect St., Southlake, celebrates the day by offering 10 percent of any purchase.

Messina Hof
The winery will be celebrating Small Business Saturday by hosting a sip and shop event in which guests can shop among items from local Grapevine merchants. The event is from 2-5 p.m. at 201 S. Main St., Grapevine.
Businesses that participate in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26 can receive promotional materials from American Express. Businesses do not have to accept American Express credit cards to use the posters, signs and other promotional items. Businesses are also using several social media hashtags for the event, including #shopsmall.
