Frisco officials reschedule programming, offer tips ahead of freezing temperatures

Frisco is under a winter storm warning Jan. 23-25, with an additional extreme cold watch Jan. 24-26, according to a city news release.

As city officials prepare for freezing temperatures, residents are also advised to take precautions.

The local impact

The following city of Frisco facilities have been impacted by inclement weather:

• All Frisco Public Library programming and events this weekend have been canceled
• City Hall 101 has been moved from Monday, Jan. 26, to Wednesday, Jan. 28.
• Friday’s Music in the Chamber performance has been postponed.

How to prepare

The Frisco Public Works Department shared five steps to prepare for a freeze:

• Turn off sprinklers at the controller and ensure the system is not set to run automatically.
• Disconnect and drain all garden hoses and cover any exposed pipes or faucets.
• Protect indoor pipes by opening cabinet doors under sinks and setting faucets to five drips per minute.
• Locate water shutoff valves for homes and sprinkler systems.
• Prepare outdoor areas by moving potted plants indoors, protecting sensitive plants with frost cloth and covering garden beds with 2-4 inches of mulch.

Residents who will be out of town during the freeze should still take precautions because pipes can burst even if no water is running.

If a pipe bursts during the freeze, residents can call Public Works at 972-292-5800 or the nonemergency dispatch number at 972-292-6010.

City officials also directed residents to prepare for possible power outages by stocking up on flashlights and extra batteries.

Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution, park away from the street and avoid blocking storm drains and fire hydrants to allow road crews room to work.
