Frisco ISD students will be out of school a week earlier than usual in the 2026-27 school year due to the upcoming PGA Championship.

The championship, which will be held the week of May 17, 2027, creates operational and safety concerns that district officials began discussing a year ago, FISD Deputy Superintendent Todd Fouche said during a Nov. 17 board meeting. The district’s board of trustees later approved the academic calendar during the meeting.

Put in perspective

Officials estimate the PGA Championship will bring in 30,000 people daily to Frisco. Fouche explained that a temporary city will essentially be built in the northwest side of the school district near about nine FISD schools and that the tournament will not just affect those schools, but the entire FISD community.

District leaders met with the Frisco Police and Fire Departments, emergency medical services and city officials, Fouche said, and determined from a safety and security standpoint that the best way to move forward was to end the school year a week earlier than typical.

The framework

District officials surveyed the FISD community in September for the calendar and received responses from over 8,400 parents and almost 3,200 staff members. Overall, district leaders responded favorably to the recommended calendar.

The details

Here are some important dates to note in the calendar:
  • First day of school: Aug. 12
  • Student holiday: Sept. 7-8
  • Fall break: Oct. 9-13
  • Thanksgiving break: Nov. 23-27
  • Winter break: Dec. 21-Jan. 4
  • Student holiday: Feb. 12-15

Two bad weather make-up days are scheduled for May 26, 2027, and April 16, 2027. Days for professional development, teacher work time and parent teacher conferences have not yet been determined, and will be included in the workday calendars published this January, according to the meeting presentation.

The calendar will provide three less contract days for personnel, but there will not be a pay reduction in the 2026-27 school year. The district will revert to normal contract lengths in future school years.

Five minutes will also be added to the school day to meet state requirements. School times for the 2026-27 calendar will be:
  • 7:45 a.m.-3:10 p.m. for elementary schools
  • 8:25 a.m.-3:50 p.m. for middle and intermediate schools
  • 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for high schools
The complete 2026-27 academic calendar can be found on the district's calendar webpage.
