Collin College will offer a new baccalaureate degree during the fall 2025 semester, according to a news release.

The Bachelor of Applied Technology in Software Development is the college’s fifth baccalaureate degree program. The college received final approval for the program from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College on April 4.

The details

The program will be housed at the Collin College Frisco Campus and will build on the school’s existing program that offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Software Development.

Students in the program will learn “real-world software development practices” and modern programming frameworks through hands-on experience, the release states, including learning how to create, test and maintain software applications and systems. The program will also enable students to develop project management and collaboration skills that are commonly required in software development roles.


“Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Technology in Software Development will be prepared for a rewarding career in this high-demand, high-pay field,” said Diana Hopes, campus provost of the Frisco and Celina campuses, in the release.

Admission to the bachelor’s degree program requirements include:
  • Admission to Collin College
  • Completion of the school’s Associate of Applied Science degree program in Software Development or completion of a closely related degree from an accredited educational institution
  • An completed application to the BAT in Software Development program
The program will prepare students for professional roles such as software developers, database administrators, IT project managers and full-stack engineers, the college’s website states.

The context

The college, which offers over 200 degrees and certificates and serves more than 60,000 students annually, is able to offer up to five baccalaureate degrees following the passing of Texas House Bill 3348 in the 87th legislative session held in 2021-22. The bill increased the number of baccalaureate programs allowed to be offered at public junior colleges in the state from three to five, according to a July 2021 news release from the school.


Collin College launched its first bachelor’s degree programs in spring 2020, the release states. The first two baccalaureate degree programs included Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Applied Technology in Cybersecurity.

Another bachelor degree, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management, was added in Fall 2022. The school began offering the Bachelor of Applied Science in Clinical Operations Management degree program during the fall 2023 semester.
