The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees voted Thursday night to move forward with the proposed bond package, which will now appear under one proposition on the May 7 election.
The bond will include $50.3 million for a new stadium and events center and comes with a tax decrease due to the retiring of old debt and increase in tax base.
The items within the bond have been vetted by a committee of more than 100 residents who MISD officials asked to review current facilities, future needs, district’s bonding capacity, prioritize projects, and recommend a bond program to the trustees.
The $220 million bond will include $35 million devoted to classroom and instructional technology, infrastructure, servers and similar items, and further funding of the district’s “1 to the World” program, which aims to supply laptops to every high school student at MISD.
The bond will also include $39.6 million for a fine arts extension, which would include a new, expanded auditorium at McKinney High School, expansions to both Evans Middle School and Cockrill Middle School band halls, as well as the McKinney Boyd High School band hall and general district band infrastructure refreshment.
And, a highly discussed potential stadium could sit at the southeast corner of Hardin Boulevard and McKinney Ranch Road just north of SH 121 if the bond is approved. The stadium includes 12,000 seats and 2,400 to 3,000 parking spaces. Ron Poe currently has 341 dedicated parking spaces.
Facility upgrades include $42 million for HVAC and roof replacements, energy efficient lighting as well as plumbing and electrical upgrades.
