“Adults also need a space where they feel accepted and encouraged to express themselves and be creative. In some ways, I think it's even more meaningful because a lot of adults feel like it's too late or they don't have time for it.” Thomas said. “[Create] that space where you can explore these things and don’t be afraid to jump in and try stuff.”
The set up
NAMS offers a variety of private lessons including voice, piano, guitar, drums, bass and ukulele. Songwriting and music production classes are also available.
“We try to operate more like a Montessori [school], where we customize each lesson plan. There's no set curriculum,” Thomas said. “When students and instructors meet, usually at a free 15 minute mini lesson. There is an opportunity to see what the students' interests are, what they're working toward and any challenges they're having. It's all student-led and tailored to each individual.”
Thomas said NAMS music instructors have a diverse range of backgrounds including classical, gospel and school band, which allows students the freedom to pick the style of music they want to learn.
Some instructors teach multiple instruments and offer a general music exploration class.
“Kids, or adults, are introduced to all sorts of instruments until the student figures out what they connect with most, then they can focus on it or continue trying different things,” Thomas said.
Monthly performances, called NAMS Jams, are held at the studio or at local businesses including DiDi’s Downtown in Frisco.
What else?
The visual art program is under the direction of Anna Thomas’s mother, Charlotte Thomas.
“The art program is very similar to music in that it is flexible and depends on a student's interest,” Anna Thomas said. “If they just want to do sketching, then we can hone in on that and find ways to build on that. Some kids are really interested in sculpture, so we have that as well.”
Anna Thomas said she has noticed a recent uptick in parents and children taking different classes at the same time.
“We try to make things convenient for people who want to bring in the whole family and then split off and each do their own thing simultaneously,” Anna Thomas said.
One more thing
In addition to visual art and music lessons, NAMS also houses a recording studio.
The studio has multiple purposes including music production classes, as well as student and local musician recording sessions.
Anna Thomas performed and co-produced her first album—Symptoms—with business co-owner Levi Bradford. Anna Thomas’ professional name is Anna Robin Thomas and Bradford’s is Sonny Lynn.
The Background
NAMS was founded when Anna Thomas was 11 years old. The founders were Thomas’ aunt, Kelly Thomas and Anna Thomas’ former songwriter instructor Matt Gaskins.
Bradford, a former NAMS instructor, was the sole business owner for the last 12 years. A few years ago, Anna Thomas started working at NAMS in an administrative role. In early 2024, Bradford asked Anna Thomas if she would consider becoming co-owner of the business and “...lead NAMS to the next generation.” In June 2024, the partnership became official.
Anna Thomas said Bradford is slowly easing himself out of the business as she takes on more responsibility.
“He assembled a really amazing team, which is part of why I feel comfortable and capable of carrying things forward,” Anna Thomas said. “Levi really brought in a lot of the character and charm. He cultivated the coolest environment. It's like an interesting little ecosystem where students inspire instructors and instructors inspire students.”
