The city of Frisco, the Frisco Economic Development Corporation and the global innovation platform Plug and Play hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the hub May 19. It’s a 6,200-square-foot innovation hub now available to Frisco residents on the 10th floor of the Baylor Scott & White Sports Therapy & Research at The Star.
“The partnership between Plug and Play and the Frisco EDC is helping local founders grow a company, and have access to venture capital and corporate relationships that Plug and Play brings,” said David Steel, director of Frisco Plug and Play.
He said both the local and international economies will be represented at the new hub.
“We’ll just continue to keep our foot on the pedal, and we'll go full throttle to make sure that innovation keeps happening in Frisco,” he said.
The details
The facility will focus on local business startups, as well as host specialty fintech and sportstech programming. There is space where venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and corporations can collaborate.
Part of the goal behind the new space is for the city to become a venture capital hub by 2040, said Gloria Salinas, Frisco EDC’s senior vice president and chief growth officer.
What they’re saying
Origin will be a place where local businesses can get their start at an accelerated rate, Salinas said.
“We want just one central location where we know we can show up and there's networking, programming, and access to resources and education,” she said.
“The big idea of this is one day the next unicorn [$1 billion in value] will come out of Frisco, that we will grow the next Amazon out of our own dirt, and we'll see that big corporation grow and develop here,” Salinas said.
