Customers can personalize signs in three-hour workshops.[/caption]Owners and best friends Melissa Winton and Melissa Lagrange were talking over wine in January 2016 when they had the idea to start a “make and take” home decor business by combining their artistic abilities.
“Maybe it was the wine talking, but we couldn’t sleep. We took it back to my house, it’s 2 o’clock in the morning, we’re on bottle number four and we’re writing down notes,” Winton said. “The next morning, I was like, ‘I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t sleep.’ And [Lagrange] said, ‘I couldn’t either.’”
The two worked together well from the beginning because of their similarities and their “perfectly matched” differences, Winton said. Winton is an expert in distressing decor and Lagrange is an expert in restoring decor, Winton said.
Three days after their original idea, the duo—joined by their husbands—created a business plan. After four months of working on the brand and the space, they opened Crafted Home Decor Studio in 2016.
“I remember the day I got the keys and we could actually occupy the space,” Winton said. “It was an IT space with awful blue walls and vinyl wood floors. It was a horrible space, but we were so excited because we had the same vision of what we were going to do with the space.”
Crafted allows customers to work with wood, power tools and paint in a tutorial style environment. The goal is to give customers the confidence to create beautiful home decor with
step-by-step instructions, Winton said.
The business hosts private events, such as girls’ night out and corporate team-building events by appointment, as well as public workshops.
Signs range from 18 inches to 6 feet in length, and smaller boards are available for children age 6 and older. Each project is unique to its creator, from picking each board to assembling and branding the finished product.
“We know that 80 percent of the people that come in here have never properly operated a drill before.” Winton said. “... So we know people are nervous. We do a lot of step-by-step on what the best way to get the best outcome is.”
